Louisiana Homes & Gardens Design Awards 2008: Architectural Building Design: Renovation

Architectural / Building Design – Renovation

Jim Sullivan, Architect

The Simon residence renovation is a contemporary reinterpretation of a mid‐century modern home. The intention of the design was to reinvigorate the existing modern qualities of the structure yet add elements of glamour and cosmopolitan appeal. The exterior of the house was painted white and new outdoor lighting was installed to highlight the various outdoor living spaces typical of 1950s architecture. The landscaping surrounding the house was designed to combine the essence of a relaxed seaside village with a more elegant, upscale modern feel. The interior was slightly reorganized to facilitate circulation through the house and radiates from the centrally located, custom designed library. The custom wood panels, which are finished in an aubergine pre‐catalyzed lacquer ‘car body’ paint, appear to float around the room. The entire rear wall of the house is a folding glass door system (NanaWall) that seamlessly extends to the outdoor pool area. The overall effect is a stylish yet comfortable living space where the boundaries between indoors and outdoors all but disappear. ✦
