Sunburst Shutters: Because You Deserve the Best

Written by: Lisa LeBlanc-Berry

Window shutters add a nice touch to a home’s exterior as well as its interior. Shutters typically coordinate with a home’s design to bring out a certain style in its appearance.

More and more people are selecting shutters over drapes, shades, or blinds because they last longer, are easier to clean, look better, and add more value to the home than any other window covering. People consider them as investments in their homes; they outlast every other type of window covering.

A lot of people prefer shutters for their windows because of their durability, classic look, and low-maintenance appeal. For those who want only the best, there is no more beautiful window treatment than a Sunburst shutter. These unique shutters instantly transform the appearance of your home.

Sunburst’s Polywood shutters complement any décor and establish a look that blends with every design from traditional to contemporary. Additionally, Sunburst shutters increase your home’s value. They are built with energy conservation in mind, and feature an exclusive flexible flap on each stile to help block out more temperature and light than any other shutter. In tests, Polywood was proven to be up to 70 percent more energy efficient than wood shutters. Polywood’s paint finish is UV coated to provide ultimate protection from the elements.

“Our Polywood shutters are made with synthetic material that won’t fade and won’t crack,” says Todd Morris, president of Sunburst Shutters located in Mandeville. “They have better values than wood in this climate. The synthetic exterior shutters were approved for use by the Vieux Carré Commission. They actually meet the product specifications for plantation or exterior colonial shutters for the time period,” he says. “We also provide hurricane shutters that meet the Dade County specifications for wind impact of 140 miles an hour.”

With the appearance of a quality wood shutter, Polywood will not warp, split, or peel under the pressures of time, heat, or moisture. Polywood also receives kudos for its earth-friendly qualities. It is made from a recyclable synthetic material (a wood substitute made from solid resin with a patented baked or paint finish) and can act as an insulator, thus significantly reducing your heating and cooling bills. They not only increase a home’s energy efficiency and add to a home’s value, but they are the ultimate solution for temperature, light, and noise control.

“The interior plantation Polywood shutters have been on the market for 25 years,” says Morris. “It is the largest selling plantation shutter in the United States. We have 40 stores nationally that are individually owned,” he explains.

The company was founded by Ron Swapp in 1979. In early 1970, while living in Las Vegas, Swapp and his wife wanted to buy custom shutters for their windows. Swapp decided to order the shutter components from a company in California and build the shutters himself. Soon many of his neighbors, family, and friends wanted shutters as well, so Swapp began building them in his garage. He was later transferred to Phoenix because of his job, and soon opened a small shop to build shutters while continuing a career in pharmaceutical sales. He then decided that the shutter business would become his future. Sunburst Shutters began growing steadily.

In 1987, Swapp hired his nephew, Dix Jarman, and they opened a branch of Sunburst Shutters in Las Vegas, followed by branches in Dallas, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa. During this time they began searching for ways to improve their product. With the help of companies in Europe, they developed a product that was far superior to wood, and named the new product Polywood.

They launched the new Polywood product in 1993. After only one year, Polywood Shutters was the fastest growing shutter brand in the country. In 1993, Sunburst Shutters sold more than $6 million in Polywood Shutters nationwide. In 1998, more than $50 million in Polywood Shutters were sold in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Saudi Arabia. Currently, Polywood Shutters is the top selling shutter brand in the world.

Morris stresses that his Sunburst Shutters store in Mandeville provides excellent service. “We will come out and do free in-home estimates,” he explains. “Everything is custom made. And we provide installation by our certified installers. There is no contract labor.” A full line of products is on view in the Mandeville showroom. ✦
