M&M Glass Company: The M&M Touch
Chris Van Pelt remembers the first time he saw framed mirrors. A contractor he works with at M&M Glass Company showed him a Baton Rouge home in the Pond on Hart’s Mill Lane. Inside were ornately decorated gold-framed mirrors. At that moment four years ago, he realized M&M Glass Company sooner or later would venture into framed mirrors. “I knew that when people started seeing that, it was going to take off,” Van Pelt says.
Their venture in framed glass mirrors has been a great success, expanding the residential glass company’s services beyond its more than 20-year history of custom shower doors, mirrors, and glass. With 25 frames in stock from industry leaders like Omega, Roma, Studio, and Larson-Juhl, M&M Glass Company can accommodate any frame, large or small. Because they order frames by the box and not by the stick and keep a large inventory on site, they will do it quickly (most framed mirrors are done within a day) and cheaply (as low as $10 per linear foot installed). Each frame is also installed with a Z-bar, allowing the mirror to slide on, align flush with the wall, and bear hefty weight.
If you think you’ve seen it all with custom mirrors, you haven’t heard the ideas Van Pelt and his team, lead by owner Bob Mitchell, have brought to fruition. One customer wanted to install a two-way mirror in their bathroom above the vanity. Cut into the wall behind the two-way mirror is a flat-screen TV that materializes in the mirror when the patron wants a bit of evening news with their nightly tooth brushing. The two-way framed mirror concept has also been brought into living room areas, hiding plasma TVs above fireplaces. “Basically, the sky’s the limit,” he says. “If it can be done and we feel comfortable doing it, then we look for ways to do it.” Each job is truly customized, with Van Pelt or Mitchell visiting the customer’s home for measurements and choice selection, ensuring variables like light and space are thoroughly incorporated.
The same philosophy applies to custom glass for showers, cabinets, windows, doors, desks, and the like, whether M&M Glass Company is working with contractors or individual homeowners. With more than 150 varieties of glass to choose from—like satin, driftwood, droplets, and glacier—there is no shortage of what you can dream up and achieve for your home. “People are building what they want. They have specific things in mind that they’ve seen even at a friend’s house or in a picture or while on trip,” Van Pelt says. “What we try to do is recreate that for them with glass.”
Even with sky’s-the-limit options, “clear” is today’s most popular glass choice for showers. Van Pelt attributes its popularity with its quick and effective way to add visible room square footage while displaying more elaborate showers. “People are using ornate, beautiful glass tiles imported from Italy, travertine, different kinds of porcelain, and clay tiles,” he says. “You don’t want to cover it up with glass you can’t see through.”
Whether you are in the market for clear glass for your shower, custom framed mirrors for your living room, or just a sturdy piece of glass for your desk, M&M Glass Company gives you options. A staple in Baton Rouge metropolitan area homes for two decades, these custom glass pieces will soon find their way to homes in Lafayette, New Orleans, and Northshore as M&M Glass Company expands its service area. Soon residents and contractors across south Louisiana will experience the M&M touch, with myriad choices, quick service, guaranteed quality, and affordability. ✦
