A Modern Gem: Adison Norland
It’s a popular misconception that modern design is stark and minimalist. The warm, cozy décor at Adison Norland in Lafayette is anything but bare bones. Mother and daughter team Glenda and Heather Delahoussaye have created a local gem, providing innovative modern design, inspired living, and personal service to the south Louisiana region. When you walk into Adison Norland, you’ll see that today’s contemporary interiors can be comfortable without being cluttered, offering a refreshing alternative to the tired traditional designs. Modern styles utilize clean lines, fresh colors, novel textures, and inventive designs, and they are equally appropriate for the home and the office. “There are so many possibilities with contemporary style,” says Glenda. “You’re not limited like you are with traditional design. You can really express who you are.” Glenda and Heather are proud that their business is local—a surprising fact considering their unique style. “Most people think we’re a franchise or that we have multiple locations. Although we serve many parts of south Louisiana, we are one local store,” says Heather. Customers quickly learn to appreciate the Adison Norland experience, which is worlds apart from the corporate alternatives.
“It’s stressful enough to furniture shop! We offer a non-pushy approach to shopping,” says Heather. “We are proud of our personal service. We encourage customers to tell us their needs and what they envision for each space. It’s like building a friendship; we want to be part of their story.” Often customers come back a year or two after buying a piece and are pleasantly surprised to find that the Delahoussayes remember them well. “We keep tabs on the details of each family and their home. We make a connection with each customer, and that kind of customer relationship is what you lose at the big box stores,” says Glenda.
“We’re all about starting with basic pieces as a foundation and then working to complete the look,” says Glenda. “We sell livable furniture. We create living spaces that are comfortable, stylish, affordable, and easy to maintain. The trends these days are also moving towards smaller spaces, and traditional furniture often doesn’t fit in these spaces well. With contemporary pieces, we can create an environment that is visually lighter and more spacious.”
“The collection of pieces we offer allows each customer the opportunity to develop their own eclectic style. We work with some customers who want to do a completely contemporary look, some who want transitional style, and others who imagine traditional design with a modern flair,” says Glenda. “We sell all furniture individually and offer space planning, so the customer can select each item and we make sure it’s perfect for their space.”
Glenda fell in love with contemporary furniture at the age of 17, a mere student when she began to work at Adison Norland. She worked alongside the original owners for 10 years, finishing her degree as a licensed interior designer while she learned the ropes of the business. She bought the company in 1987 and has been living out her dream ever since, offering cutting-edge contemporary furniture to the south Louisiana region for over 30 years. “I never dreamed at 17 that I would be where I am today. It has been a great journey.”
Adison Norland is still the only contemporary furniture store in Acadiana. “We’re always changing, creating new looks and displays, finding new products. It’s something different for the community, something fresh.” Glenda and Heather continue to take pride in maintaining the personalized service that makes Adison Norland so popular. Now they have expanded into the digital realm, using their website (www.adisonnorland.com), an e-newsletter, and a facebook page. “We want only the best for our customers, so we try to keep them up to date and educated on the latest products and trends,” says Heather. “We find joy in building a lasting environment for our clients,” Glenda says. “We have offered contemporary furniture and accessories for 34 years in south Louisiana. It’s more than making a sale to us—it’s a lifestyle.” ✦
